CATARC (Tianjin) Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co.,Ltd. selects Rohde & Schwarz to supply full vehicle antenna test (FVAT) system

CATARC (Tianjin) Automotive Engineering Research InstituteCo.,Ltd. has selected leading global test and measurement supplier Rohde &Schwarz to supply a full vehicle antenna test (FVAT) system and supportservices. The system is required to optimize the performance and location ofantenna modules, verify compliance with wireless and EMC standards and ensureproper operation of a vehicle’s wireless system. These aspects are essentialfor the development of emerging technologies such as autonomous driving.

Today’s vehicles support a multitude of wireless standardsrequiring high-performance antennas, such as satellite navigation (GNSS), tirepressure monitoring systems (TPMS), keyless entry (e.g. UWB) and cellularconnectivity (4G, 5G). The challenge for tier 1 component suppliers and OEMvehicle designers is to ensure optimal performance of individual antennamodules and entire vehicles after the systems have been integrated. This isparticularly demanding because the material and shape of a vehicle body affectsantenna performance, and different standards often use similar frequency bands.

Theturnkey solution for full-vehicle active and passive antenna tests that Rohde& Schwarz is supplying to CATARC (Tianjin) Automotive Engineering ResearchInstitute Co.,Ltd. includes a full anechoic over-the-air (OTA) test chamber, aturntable, an antenna gantry and vehicle lift, the R&S TS8991 testsystem and R&S AMS32 OTA measurement software. Furthermore, Rohde& Schwarz is providing project services such as system engineering, training, on-site installation and calibration. CATARC (Tianjin) AutomotiveEngineering Research Institute Co.,Ltd. and their clients can characterize theentire vehicle antenna radiation pattern in 3D, facilitating optimal positioningand integration of antenna modules and supporting validation as well ascertification of antenna systems in a controlled RF environment.

Rohde& Schwarz Market Segment Manager Automotive, Ralf Oestreicher comments: “Weare seeing increasing demand for reliable full-vehicle antenna testing as theautomotive industry strives to ensure connectivity, efficiency and vehiclesafety. As a market leader in EMC, OTA and antenna test solutions, Rohde &Schwarz is proud to meet the demanding system and service requirements of sucha prestigious organisation as CATARC (Tianjin) Automotive Engineering ResearchInstitute Co.,Ltd.. We look forward to working with CATARC (Tianjin) AutomotiveEngineering Research Institute Co.,Ltd. and the automotive industry in thefuture to ensure that all vehicle wireless systems function smoothly and helpmake autonomous vehicles a reality.”

Over-the-air(OTA) test systems provide passive and active OTA antenna measurements using asingle probe setup with high measurement accuracy and optional extension of thefrequency range to millimeterwave bands, covering the main wirelesscommunication bands and even automotive radar frequencies. The Chair ofHigh-Frequency Engineering of the Technical University of Munich developed aninnovative near-field to far-field (NF-FF) transformation algorithm called fastirregular antenna field transformation (FIAFTA), which has been integratedinto R&S AMS32. The algorithm ensures that the antenna pattern ofthe full vehicle can be obtained in a relatively compact test environment suchas an anechoic chamber rather than the real far field range length of hundredsof meters. This feature allows extrapolation of results in areas wheremechanical constraints or reflections make measurements impossible. The CADshape of the vehicle can also be imported into the analysis software.

CATARC(Tianjin) Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co.,Ltd. has a long-termrelationship with Rohde & Schwarz in various fields such as C-V2X and EMCsystems. The two companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding forcollaboration on future projects.
